CloseThis stunning Barbera is brought to us by lifelong winemaker, Zmagoslav Petrič who grew up helping his father in their modest winery. In 2005 he founded Guerila, near the Italian-Slovenian border with a commitment to biodynamics. This 100% Barbera is hand-picked and spontaneously fermented before a generous period of maceration followed by a year on the lees in large, neutral oak foudres. Bottling occurs without filtration, and only a touch of sulfur. The nose intrigues with notes of dark forest fruits, undergrowth, leather, and graphite. Medium-bodied but expansive, the palate leads with ripe blackberry and blueberry, a dash of sour cherry, then earthy loam and an herbaceous hint of mint. The structure is defined by prominent but fine tannins which mesh seamlessly with crisp acidity. Pair with world class red with pomegranate glazed Kufteh meatballs or a beetroot tarte tatin.
