CloseFourth-generation winemaker Lionel Maurel brings this intriguing blend of 40% Carignan, 40% Syrah, and 20% Cinsault from the town of Nebian, about 40 km northwest of Montpelier. Organically farmed, his 70-year-old terraced Carignan vines yield a brooding, earthy wine, reflecting the ancient volcanic soil and Villafranchian-era pebbles of the region, while simultaneously retaining its freshness. Spontaneous fermentation and light filtration with minimal SO2 at bottling. Lionel's deft touch is evident in this medium-to-light bodied red with a slight barnyard note on the nose, fresh juicy red berries on the palate, well-integrated tannins, and a slightly savory olive note on the finish. Enjoy this wine's complexity with a cassoulet or a Fougasse bread filled with olives, cheese and bacon, or better yet, morsels of duck.
