ClosePelaverga, a grape native to Verduno, the northernmost appellation in Barolo, is only produced by seven or so wineries. Basadone means poppies in the local dialect (Papavero in Italian) but also means a little kiss - thus the local tradition that deems Pelaverga an aphrodisiac. The vineyards of the Castello di Verduno which was built in the 1500’s and belonged to the Royal House of Savoy until it was sold in 1909, are farmed organically, harvested by hand and fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeast and minimal SO2. The nose is compelling with floral, herbal and wild berry aromas followed by overtones of black pepper and nutmeg while the palate is light and fresh with moderate tannins, balanced acidity and an earthy, forest floor note. This unique wine pairs well with salumi and soft, semi-stinky alpine cheese like Taleggio.
