Made since 1865 by an infusion of gentian, cinchona (quinine) and renown herbs of the Grand Chartreuse mountains in a Mistelle wine base. Popular with sporting-types, Bonal was an early sponsor of the Tour de France. A bit lighter in body than many of its contemporaries, it is nonetheless intensely bitter. Traditionally enjoyed neat or with a twist, it may also be used to enhance classic cocktails in place of sweet vermouth.
