Gnarly Vines December Wine of the Month Club Four Pack
At the beginning of each month, the Gnarly Vines team carefully curates a set of four bottles — typically two reds, one white, and a seasonal selection — that we think are alluring and exciting.
2024 Delinquente Weeping Juan Pet Nat - South Australia (750ml) - $27.50
Weeping Juan is a gorgeous, pink, bubbly blend of 75% Vermentino and 25% Nero de Avola that hails from the sun soaked Basshams Organic Barmera Vineyard. 2024 was a near perfect vintage that was warm but not too hot, with cool nights and very little rain or humidity. Each varietal was harvested, direct-pressed and vinified separately in stainless steel tank with native yeast. Before fermentation is complete, the wines are blended and finish fermenting in the bottle to trap the CO2 and create a Pet Nat. Enticing aromatics of strawberry, ginger and rose, are followed by a crunchy delicious palate of cranberry, apricot and pomegranate. Bursting with untamed exuberance, Weeping Juan is a refreshing companion for a classic Ceviche with Sea Bass (unless f course you can find Corvina), or a spicy Thai Green Papaya Salad.
2022 Moinoterra Winery Assyrtiko - Crete, Greece (750ml) - $29.50
This compelling, medium-bodied Assyrtiko hails from a single plot on the northern slope of Mount Juchta north of Archanes, an area with at least 4,000 years of documented viticulture. Moinoterra, references the Minoan Kingdom and also contains the Greek word for wine, oinos. The vineyard sits adjacent to an excavated Minoan era (2700-1100 BCE) farm with an olive press and wine jars. After a whole grape pressing and a natural fermentation the wine rests on its lees for 8 months for increased body, flavor and complexity. A vibrant nose of kiwi and white tea welcome a bright palate of stone fruit, ripe mandarin and lemon pith with a dose of creamy leesiness. Pair with Greek classics such as Spanakopita, feta cheese or freshly grilled octopus.
2021 Michele Alois Campole Aglianico - Campania, Italy (750ml) - $22
Nestled among the foothills of the Caitini Mountains, dwarfed by Mount Vesuvius, the Alois family’s roots date back to the Kingdom of Two Sicilies when they supplied fine silks to the royal familes. In the early ’90’s, patriarch Michele broke the family tradition and founded the winery where he focused on both indigenous varietals as well as restoring forgotten ones. Harvested by hand from clay and craggy, volcanic soil, this 100% Aglianico is pressed into stainless steel tank where it macerates for 16 days with frequent pumpovers before being transferred to large Italian oak casks to complete fermentation. Restrained dark plum aromas are met with earthy notes on the palate, complemented by hints of brambly raspberry, black pepper and forest woodsiness. With firm tannins and moderate acidity, this well structured, rustic red pairs perfectly with Bistecca alla Fiorentina (traditional Florentine steak) or with a simple but excellent Margherita pizza.
2022 La Grange aux Belles La Chaussée Rouge - Loire Valley, France (750ml) - $26
La Chaussée Rouge is a medium-bodied, fresh, funky blend of 40% Cab, 40% Cab Franc and 20% Grolleau from 40+ year old vines across five communes in the Loire Valley’s Coteaux L’Aubance. Farmed biodynamically, the grapes are handpicked over up to five passes if necessary and sorted to ensure optimal ripeness before natural fermentation. The wine is then aged in fiberglass tanks to showcase the high tone berry flavors. Notes of strawberry and raspberry accentuate a palate of fresh cherry, graphite minerality, and a somewhat earthy, slightly barnyardy finish. Pair with a garlic, rosemary and oregano roasted leg of lamb with fingerling potatoes or a parmesan roasted delicata squash served with brussels sprouts.
