Gnarly Vines March 2025 Wine of the Month Club Four Pack:

NV Joao Pato (aka Duckman) Espumante Rosa Duck Pet Nat - Beiras, Portugal (750ml) - $21
João Pato was the first to produce DO Bairrada wines back in 1970 but now, his granddaughter Maria runs the estate and makes her wines outside the DO regulations for more freedom of expression. Rosa Duck is a delicious, scintillatingly sparkler that defies categorization. Made mostly from the Maria Gomes varietal (aka Firnao Pires) from 25 year old vines planted to several plots of chalky-clay soils, the juice is gently pressed into concrete eggs where it macerates on Baga skins, extracting color and tannin. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel and then in bottle with a dosage, where the bubbles are trapped, as in Champagne, but it’s not disgorged, like a PetNat. Medium-bodied with crisp acidity, fresh red berry and zesty citrus flavors, it an easily pairable wine, great for parties, picnics, cheese platters or clam bakes!

2023 Pheasant's Tears Tibaani Mtsvane - Kakheti, Georgia (750ml) - $28
This gorgeous white from 100% Mtsvane emerges from the sandstone and quartz soils surrounding the village of Tibaani in Kakheti, Eastern Georgia - closer to the Caspian Sea than the Black Sea. The semi-dessert climate features hot and dry days with cool and windy nights, creating the perfect conditions for balance between ripeness and acidity. Farmed organically and crushed gently, the juice macerates on its skins for three days prior to fermentation in qvevri, traditional clay vessels, after which it’s racked to a new qvevri where it rests for an additional year. The result is an approachable yet ancient style of white wine that's medium-bodied with ripe stone fruit and pear flavors, honeysuckle, earthy, clay minerality and a tangy finish with notes of citrus rind and bitter almond. Pairs perfectly with hard salty cheeses, aged Gouda or strong oily fish like mackerel or herring.

2020 Tete Rouge Bagatelle Saumur Cabernet Franc - Loire Valley, France (750ml) - $24
Bagatelle, meaning a trifle or trinket, is a pleasing if understated, peasant wine in the best sense of the word. Honest and unpretentious, it’s 100% Cabernet Franc from vineyards that have been certified organic since 1998 and biodynamic since 2010 and vinified traditionally. Harvest is performed manually, the grapes are destemmed, macerated for 3 weeks and fermented naturally in concrete tank where the wine rests for 9 months. The result is a textbook, medium-bodied Cab Franc that’s crisp and firm with fresh red and black berry flavors, hints of white and green pepper, granite minerality and supple tannins. Pairs perfectly with Quiche Lorraine, leek tart or roast chicken.

2020 Cremisan Baladi - West Bank, Palestine (750ml) - $29
A captivating expression of the indigenous Palestinian Baladi Aswad elliptical grape, that's cultivated organically in the Cremisan Valley and Hebron regions at an elevation of around 800 meters. Handpicked in early September, the grapes undergo fermentation with skins and seeds using selected yeasts at controlled temperatures in stainless steel, followed by at least 14 months in oak, mostly used. Deep and bold, it boasts a bouquet and flavors of raspberry compote, plum, and cranberry, married with earthy nuances reminiscent of a forest floor. The oak aging imparts gentle spice and soft tannins, leading to a long, dry finish. Pairs well with lamb kofta kebabs, spicy sausages, or Mansaf, a traditional Bedouin feast featuring a leg of lamb on a bed of yellow rice with spices, nuts and yogurt sauce.
