Gnarly Vines November
Wine of the Month Club Four Pack
At the beginning of each month, the Gnarly Vines team carefully curates a set of four bottles — typically two reds, one white, and a seasonal selection — that we think are alluring and exciting.

Nana Vins et Cie Suzette (lot 22)- Languedoc-Roussillon, France (750ml) - $23

Suzette, from Nana Vins is a blend of the obscure Clairette and the completely unknown Terret Gris, though both are apparently used in Vermouth. Certified organic and following biodynamic principles, nettle and horsetail decoctions are used to spray the foliage, the soil is plowed and grass is grown between the vines. After harvesting by hand, the grapes are direct pressed, the juice settles for 24 hours then transferred to vats in which spontaneous fermentation occurs. Notes of white peach and asian pear mix with cucumber, tomato leaf and sweet basil. Lifted by zesty but balanced acidity, Suzette pairs well with an artichoke gratin or an endive, fig and heirloom tomato salad with fresh tarragon and Gorgonzola.

2022 Luis Seabra Xisto Illimitado Branco - Douro, Portugal (750ml) - $35
As a leader in new Portuguese winemaking, Luis Seabra has been dedicated to making fresh and elegant wines for nearly two decades in the Douro. While both his red and white wines showcase the unique terroir of various vineyard sites, Xisto Ilimitado provides an introduction to the dominant schist soil type with minimal interventions. A field blend of 60% Rabigato, 15% Gouveio, 15% Códega, and 10% Viosinho, the wine is fermented with indigenous yeast and aged on lees for one year in predominantly used barrels. Beautifully balanced with peach and honeysuckle aromas, the wine brings out meyer lemon, stonefruit and pear blossom on the palate before finishing with a touch of minerality and salinity. Enjoy with grilled swordfish, fennel roasted chicken, or linguine alle vongole.

2022 Rodica Refosk - Primorska, Slovenia (750ml) - $24
Founded in 1998 by car mechanic turned winemaker, Marinko Rodica, his eponymous winery focuses on indigenous varietals like Refošk among others, planted and farmed organically on previously abandoned land. This dry red is hand-harvested from their vineyard in the Istrian hillside. The grapes are de-stemmed and macerated briefly with their pulp and skins before spontaneous fermentation. The wine ages for 30 months in used barrique barrels until bottling. Generous aromas of dark fruit jam, cacao, forest floor and black pepper give way lead to a medium-bodied palate with ripe black currant, juicy cherry and notes of tilled earth and smoke with dry, velvety tannins on the finish. Pair with an Istrian-style beef goulash or black-eyed peas with stewed tomatoes.

2020 Viña Sastre Roble - Ribera del Duero, Spain (750ml) - $28.5
From vineyards dotting the shores of the Duoro river comes this classic 100% Tempranillo. Hand harvested, the grapes see a long and slow maceration at low temperatures followed by 8 months in a mix of used French and American oak barrels. Medium to full bodied, this wine shows black cherry and plum along with dry earthiness and a touch of cedar box, tied together with firm tannins. Pair with juicy low and slow brisket or charred soy butter glazed king trumpet mushrooms.
