Founded by Leo Hernández and his business partner Victor Moreno, Grulani Mezcal comes from a century long tradition of making rich and diverse mezcals from wild agave in San Baltazar Guelavila. The name Grulani comes from the indigenous Zapotec word for “fire in the mouth,” a name and cultural history that Hernández dutifully lives up to. He uses all wild agaves and harvests his espadín later than most due to colder climate, typically between 10 to 12 years of age. He then uses traditional methods of production, using earthen ovens, horse and stone mills, and copper stills before bottling in hand blown glass bottles adorned with fiber labels made from the pulpy residue of the leftover distillation process. The Espadín is complex and intense with notes of green citrus, light smoke, and excellent minerality. Sip neat or on the rocks!
