The Sangallo Distillery Cinque was founded in 1964 by Giovanni Bergamino in Monterosso al Mare, one of the five villages of Liguria’s famed Cinque Terre coastline. This Amaro however, hails from Genoa, about 90km up the coast, and was first made by Umberto Briganti in 1923 who named it after his wife, Camatti. As was common in that era, the bitters were originally prepared by the local pharmacist and prescribed for their healing properties. After disappearing from the market for several decades, Giovanni’s nephew Stefano, revived it in 1994, remaining faithful to the original (and secret) recipe in which the bitters and botanicals are macerated and mixed in a grain neutral spirit with some added sugar and bottled at 20%abv. Not too sweet and not too biter, this balanced amaro boasts an abundance of dried fruit and a whiff of eucalyptus on the nose. Mint mingles on the palate with cola, gentian, angelica and bitter almond. A wonderful digestivo, it also works great in a Mad Mule with lime juice and ginger beer!
