2012 San Polino Brunello di Montalcino - Tuscany, Italy
San Polino is a small, biodynamic vineyard from Amazon ecologists-turned artisanal winemakers. With only 2.5 hectares of vines plus 1.5 of olives, surrounded by the wilderness of mediterranean woods, it’s an ideal environment for making a world class Brunello, the crown jewel appellation for Sangiovese in Tuscany. No pesticides, herbicides, or fungicides are used in the fields. Bold red fruit flavors (think cherries, dried cranberry, wild strawberry), mouth-gripping tannins, high acidity and balsamic aromas mix combine with herb and clove notes in this vibrant full-bodied red. As required for Brunello, the San Polino is aged for at least 5 years prior to release, 2 years in old Slavonian oak and 3 in bottle. The fruit is still youthful, but it's beginning to show some development and complexity. Pair with bistecca alla fiorentina (Tuscan-style steak), portobello mushrooms with polenta or tagliatelle with rabbit ragout!
