2015 Zicari Pezzapetrosa Salento Rosso - Puglia, Italy
Pezzapetroza, literally ‘land full of stones’ is a full-bodied, powerhouse of a wine made from 100% Primitivo, Zinfandel’s old-world, more rustic cousin. Harvested in early October, these grapes have enjoyed a long growing season in the hot. Apullian sunshine, the ‘heel’ of Italy. The grapes are de-stemmed to keep the tannins in check, before they undergo a 12-15 maceration period which extracts a lot of color and concentration from the skins. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats to preserve the purity of the fruit. The result is a luscious, deep, dark, brooding wine with lots of baked red and black berry flavors, minerality, earthiness and some old shoe leather for good measure. Perfect with Parmigiana Melanzane (eggplant) or a great Italian meat pizza with any combination of capicola, salami, pepperoni or prosciutto.
