2016 Piteira Talho Branco - Alentejo, Portugal
If you’ve only recently heard about Orange wine, you’re excused for thinking it’s a new trend. Piteira is a blend of Diagalves and Roupeiro - obsure, indigenous varietals - that’s fermented and aged in Talho (clay amphora), with very little divergence from the Roman vinification techniques of 2000 years ago. The presence of stems and skins in the tank as well as the porous nature of clay that allows a certain of oxidation, results in an orange tint to the wine and imparts funky, briney as well as exotic floral aromas and flavors. Pair with Caldeirada de Peixe (Portuguese Fish Stew) or strong, stinky cheese!
