This is a whiskey with a very long, proud legacy, made by the descendants of Nathan ‘Nearest’ Green, better known as Uncle Nearest, the former slave who, in the 1850’s, literally taught a very young Jack Daniels everything he knew about making whiskey. He later became the master distiller at Jack Daniels. This is neither legend nor lore - it’s well documented and cited by the Jack Daniels Distillery - fact. 1884 is made from a mash bill of at least 51% corn with the balance of rye and malted barley. As such, they had the choice to label it as Straight Bourbon or Tennessee Whiskey but chose Premium Whiskey to honor the legacy of Nearest Green and transcend the categories. Filtered through Sugar Maple charcoal for mellowness and aged for a minimum of five years in charred new white oak barrels. It’s blended and bottled at 93 proof by Victoria Eady Butler, 5th generation direct descendant of ‘Uncle’ Nearest and a multiple award winning Master Blender in her own right. The result is an exceptional small batch whiskey that’s light on the palate with subtle maple brown sugar, cacao and toasted nut flavors as well as a hint of tobacco, cinnamon and woodsy tannin. Best for sipping neat, but makes a mean Tennessee Mule or Hella Highballer!
