CloseVecchio Magazzino Doganale is named after the customs house that Captain Jefferson of the British Royal Navy and his crew stumbled upon after a treacherous shipwreck off the Calabrian Coast. Giacando, the owner of the customs house also ran a spice shop with a bootlegging gig on the side so the Captain stuck around and collaborated on this legendary Amaro, known in Italy as Jefferson Amaro Importante. It’s made from lemons, bitter and sweet oranges, grapefruit, bergamot, rosemary, eucalyptus, gentian, rhubarb, wormwood, vanilla, oregano and a number of other unspecified herbs and spices, all grown or foraged either on the farm or from nearby vendors. Each ingredient is macerated separately at peak maturity, before final blending and sweetening with white cane sugar. Balanced yet intense, bold herbal spices lead to pithy citrus peel and bergamot notes. Drink on its own neat, on the rocks, or really up the ante and use in place of Averna in a Black Manhattan.
